An Afternoon Farm Hand

Wow, it feels like it has been a while...

Between the computer not cooperating, and life being extra busy I have not had much time to post.

Last week we spent part of our afternoon helping a friend with his sheep shearing. This particular sheep farm has a few more sheep than we do (double in numbers), as well as quite a variety of breeds. Mike helped move sheep, and I helped sort wool.

In the past, the shearer took the wool with him to sell. (for hardly anything) Recently, my friend started needle felting, and sees wool in a whole new light.  I helped sort the wool, keeping some of the better fleeces out of the sheep shearers wool bag.

They use the same shearer that we do, but with his bigger flock the shearer bought along a shearing trailer to make the job go easier. Pretty Nifty contraption.

I fell in love with this BFL cross lamb. He is about a week old, and the sweetest little guy.
I LOVE the ears!!

I know they are relieved to have that yearly task checked off of their calendar. I was glad to be able to help a little.

Hay, Wool, & Sheep

Hay, Wool, and Sheep-that has what has been keeping me busy these days.

I have a local craft show that I decided to attend, so I have spent a lot of time in the mill and in my make shift fiber studio. Processing and dyeing wool roving for felting kits, that my friend (the felter) is putting together and for spinning kits that I am putting together.  Dryer balls are always a big hit, so I have spent many evenings making those as well.

The sheep have been enjoying leisurely days in the pasture. We are getting ready to start weaning one group in June, and another group in July/ We decided to sell the lambs after they are weaned. We usually keep them until Fall, but decided against it this year.

We have quite a bit of interest in the Tunis lambs, so we have started taking pictures and getting paperwork around for the ones we are selling.

We have not have any replacement Border Leicester ewes this year (Thank you Tunis Ram) and have traveled a bit buying a few lambs, and we have also added a Blue Faced Leicester and more Romney. Trying to grow the flock.

Rain has made hay season a little bit stressful. They were able to bale it before the rain, and we have spent the day bringing in it the barn. The field is next door, but it takes several trips, with only two wagons to get it back here in the barns. We are still trying to decide if we like Round Bales better than square...

I still have not planted my tomato and pepper plants yet,  that is next on the list. The garden will be small this year. We were hoping to get some more raised beds built, but it just didn't happen. I have to remind myself, that is just life and you can't do everything.

What has you busy this time of year?

Pasture Happenings

In the Spring, the grass grows faster than the animals can keep up. Over the years, the Thistle and Burdock have taken  hold of some parts in the pasture. So for those two reasons, the fields were mowed this year. 12 hours of mowing! It was a big job, but hopefully it will help eradicate some of the unwanted weeds.
