Pasture Happenings (Weekly Dose)


It has rained every day this week with a few thunderstorms thrown in here and there.  Bright side-everyone  has clean wool and we have plenty of grass. So much in fact that the sheep haven't been able to keep up with it and it  has seed headed out. As soon it dries up a little we will need to mow.  Perhaps, we need more sheep!

In the evenings...


 I have noticed that Mabel has been hanging out with Oni (horse)  I haven't quite figured out why she has ditched the flock for an equine pasture pal,  other than Oni provides her some shade while grazing.

Can we get any more crowded??

Lodge Find!

 I was so excited to find one of these at the local Thrift Shop for 15.99.

I have a growing collection of Lodge and this is a pot I have been looking for!

I love a great deal. I also love cooking with cast iron. It can be used in the kitchen, on your grill or taken on a camping trip and cooked over an open fire!
This one was in great condition and didn't need to be reconditioned like some of the cookware I have found.
Cast iron cookware can last 100 years if it is seasoned and taken care of.

If you do find a piece of cast iron cookware and it needs reconditioned it is simple and easy to do.

It may just be my imagination, but food cooked on cast iron always seems to taste better.

 In case you were wondering, I do not work for the Lodge Company!  I was just sharing my enthusiasm, not trying to sound like a commerical ;)

Pasture Happenings (Weekly Dose)

Today was the first day I have had a chance to get out and take pictures. Delaney had me spoiled by taking them for me. She would love to be out there taking pictures, but since her injury she has not been allowed to go out in the pasture. We did get good news today at the doctors, her collar bone is healing on its own which means no surgery! We are very happy about that!! So hopefully if all goes well she will be back to her ole' self in about 7-8 weeks.

It has been warm and rainy all week.  They are talking about a possible frost as the temperatures drop this weekend. I am assuming it is some sort of joke since it is the end of MAY!

At this time of year, grass if plentiful, lambs are growing and being a shepherdess is easy breezy!

As you can see in this picture we do have some fence rows to clean up. Mike has most of it done but this area was too wet this Spring.

Did I mention that I finally got some new boots?  I have been looking for some Muck Boots but had sticker shock when I started shopping for a pair. I got lucky and found these about 30 percent off at the local farm store. They have kept my feet nice and dry this Spring.

Goats Milk Yogurt With a Twist

I  love finding new ways to use our goat milk. We have been making a lot of yogurt lately and we have been making smoothies, yogurt pops, and tonight ice cream. I found a wonderful recipe online for making honey-lime-vanilla yogurt! I love lime so I knew we had to give it a try.
It was a definite hit and added to my recipe box. 

It is suppose to be hot tomorrow so I also made up some yogurt pops.
One can of crushed  pineapple and one can of tropical fruit.
Put in blender. Add some honey to taste and put the fruit mixture into about a quart of yogurt and mix well. I always taste test at this point to make sure it is sweet enough. I pour the mixture into Dixie cups and place them in freezer on a large baking pan. You can wait an hour and add popsicle sticks or  leave that out and just eat with a spoon. You can also use popsicle molds.   Makes a great healthy treat for the kids when it is hot outside and one of their favorite ways to eat yogurt. I like them because the fruit combinations are limitless. Whatever you have one hand.

Part-Time Milker

Can you be a part-time milker?

I will be the first to admit I could never be a serious dairy farmer. Mike occasionally has thrown the idea of a "Dairy" around  and I am very quick to oppose such an idea. I have read several articles from farmers who run a  goat dairy and my hat goes off to them for their commitment. I, on the other hand could not commit to milking twice a day, 7 days a week, 10-12 months out of the year. I am a "lazy" milker! I let the kids help me out.  I am only concerned about getting enough milk for our family and getting it in a way that does not interfere with family vacations and other things that just come up in family life. Leaving the kids with the does and milking only once a day works great for me.

We have been milking for a couple of weeks now. With having singles this year we have been able to leave babies with mom all of the time and still get enough milk, but it is time to start separating at night. We have had enough milk for making yogurt and such but I want to start making cheese and soap so I need more.

Milking goats can be interesting. Each goat bring their own special personality to the stand.
We have three goats we are milking right now. Soapapilla and Recital are the best. They are the kind of goats that were born to milk. They make it an easy chore to accomplish.  Delilah, my Toggenburg, not so much. She does great until she runs out of food. When she is done eating she lets me know by flipping the feed bucket off the stand and with that cue I know the kicking is about to begin!  She sees no reason to be in that stand unless she gets to feed her face. She has no patience for the milker who didn't manage to finish before she did. In other words she is a BRAT!

Yesterday I had enough milk to make our first batch of soft cheese.

I am making my list for the things I need for making soap and hard cheeses. Two things that I have talked about doing for years but have never gotten around to. I am determined that 2013 is the year!  Did I just put that in writing??

Pasture Happenings (Weekly Dose)


It has been an eventful week.  My farm girl/photographer broke her collar bone. She is having a hard time being "still".  She needs to be extra careful this week, due to the type of break they are doing another x- ray next week and  will consider surgery if things look worse. She told me today that she feels lazy. She doesn't like being house bound.

The water is almost gone but we still have about a dozen geese occupying the pastures. We have been watching for babies but haven't seen any.

The Tunis never fail to come up for a visit when we are walking the field. I still am not use to "petting" the sheep. These two girls are the most friendly.

The kids are growing fast and are always on the move. Sophie is very friendly and makes a nuisance of herself during milking. The bucks steer clear of us humans.

We did manage to get a picture of them where they look like they are actually "posing" for us.

Jack Frost, the Unwanted Guest

They were calling for cold temperatures last night.  We were hopeful that it would stay windy and we would not wake up to frost.
Well, that didn't happen. We woke up to a hard frost! I went out before the sun came up and sprayed the trees and bushes with water. I really hope that does the trick. A friend of mine told me that it has worked for them for many years.

Mike was just telling me earlier this week that it looked like we would be getting peaches and cherries on our newer trees this year. I was very excited about that. I will be sorely disappointed if we lose everything.

Last year we didn't get one bite of fruit due to the weather. I am hoping this year is not going to be the same.  I will remain optimistic! Time will tell...

Not much going on around the farm, just busy with every day life.  The weather has been great and everyone is happy browsing the pastures all day.  Evening time is a great time to watch the lambs and kids play.

Pretty in Pink

We planted Peach Trees last year. I was happy to see that they made it through the winter. They greeted us this Spring with pretty pink blossoms. Not only do they have pretty blossoms but they surprised us with a wonderful aroma!

The Pear, Apple and Cherry trees also made it through the winter.  The only tree that didn't make it was a Paw Paw tree that Mike planted.

We are hoping to get a good harvest this year. Last year with the crazy weather we didn't get any fruit.

The grass grows so fast and gets so thick in the orchard area, I would love to fence it in and let the sheep do the mowing. Someday!

Failures in the Kitchen: Yogurt Making

Last week was one of those weeks when you wonder if anything is going to go as planned!
We started milking goats and thankfully the does we have make that chore really easy. The problem is with me! I have three failed attempts at making yogurt under my belt. Three days, three failures!
Day 1- I am not sure what happened, the only thing I did differently was not pasteurize the milk before I made the yogurt
Day 2 and 3-Pasteurized the milk-Still no yogurt!
I know exactly what happened, operator error! I was making it in a crock and I usually have a heating pad that I use to keep the temperature between 90-100 degrees. I couldn't find the heating pad so I just turned the crock pot on, just for a few seconds to get it warm. Well that few seconds turned into several hours as I went shopping and forgot about it. Came home to a curdled mess! I am embarrassed to say that I tried the same thing on day 3 and though I didn't forget it for several hours, I did wander off thinking I would be right back...well not before it heated the milk up too much.
Day 4- Trying again, this time hopefully with better results. I found my heating pad and I am ready to go!
Making yogurt is easy. I hope I didn't  scare anyone off from trying. I have had some failed attempts over the years but not like this week. Too scattered brained to be in the kitchen, I guess.

Pasture Happenings

Another week has went by and the sheep and goats are all out on pasture now. Almost all of the lambs have lost their tails, the kids have been disbudded and we have been milking goats.

Delaney loves spending time outside and taking pictures. She gets some pretty good shots. The girls spend so much time out in the pasture that the sheep and goats don't seem to notice them or feel as threatened by them walking around. When I go out there they always seem to scurry away. I must have ulterior motives as far as they are concerned.

The above picture is an area of pasture where there is a row of Mulberry Trees. It is the favored spot with the the sheep and goats when it gets warm.  The goats are nice enough to keep the trees trimmed up for us.

The water is receding in the pasture but there is still plenty to keep the resident geese and ducks happy. The girls are really hoping that they have babies, we will see!
